A SURFER, 26, has died in a freak accident off Sunshine Beach, near Noosa.

His devastated girlfriend watched as an hour-long attempt to revive him failed.

The Brisbane visitor had been surfing about 400m north of the nearest patrol, near a shallow sandbank, when he struck trouble about 11am.

Conditions were around a metre and the tide was low, with waves crashing on the sandbank.

While the circumstances of the accident are still being investigated, it appears he could have been knocked unconscious after sustaining a head or neck injury in a wipe-out.

A friend who had been surfing alongside the man had paddled back to shore before the incident.

He raced to help from the beach after seeing nearby bodyboard riders attempting to bring his unconscious friend in.

Surf Life Saving Queensland’s Aaron Purchase told The Courier-Mail that Sunshine Beach lifesavers returning from a mobile patrol were passing at the time.

They were joined by paramedics and a doctor who worked on the man, who was unconscious when brought to shore.

Mr Purchase said the resuscitation effort continued for an hour before the man was pronounced dead at about noon.

“Everything that could have been done for him was done,’’ he said.

“While it’s not clear what happened, he obviously came to grief while surfing about 80m off the beach. The tide was low and the sandbank shallow with the waves about a metre or more.’’

The man’s board was still attached to him by leg-rope and was intact.

The victim’s girlfriend watched the dramatic rescue attempt and was in shock.

Anguished relatives and friends gathered at the surf club and were comforting each other.

Police are investigating and will prepare a report for the Coroner.
