26 September, Siargao Island – Philippines:  At 6 am this morning, the signs of the coming swell were evident as a mix of locals, tourists, and the competitors paddled out on daybreak to get a few waves before the anticipated start of the 20th annual Siargao International Surfing Cup this afternoon at 2:00 pm.

Contest Director Gerry Degan was in the judging tower at first light assessing the conditions, then in consultation with Head Judge Glenn Elliot and ASP Australia General Manager Dane Jordan, made the call for a 2:00 pm start for Round 1 of the competition.

“Looking at the forecast for today, we’re thinking that we’ll get better waves if we hold off until later for the incoming tide,” said Degan.  “There are some fun waves out there right now, but since we’re expecting the swell to keep increasing, and with a lower tide in the afternoon, it will start bringing a few more barrels across the reef.  We want to give the competitors the best chance at the barrels that Cloud 9 is famous for, so we’ve made a 2 pm call for the start of Round 1,” he explained.

After a small and inconsistent day of surf yesterday, this morning’s conditions are much improved, and with all the swell forecasts predicting a building swell it’s expected that there will be classic 3-6 foot Cloud 9 for the majority of the event, which will conclude on Sunday the 28th.

The 2014 Siargao International Surfing Cup is a co-sanctioned 1-star ASP Men’s World Qualifying event and a ASC Grade 4 event that will run from 24 – 28 September 2014 and boasts US$15,000 Prize Money.
